Some Barley Mill History - Did You Know?

General — Posted by: admin @ 12:20 pm

The upstairs level of the Barley Mill used to be a storage area until 1997 when it became the charming bistro and sports museum it is today.

Ted Lund, who helped in it’s creation, shudders when recalling how many times they had to screw down the wood floor and take it back up again.

The stones in both fireplaces had to be replaced with smaller ones and the original stones now rest peacefully at the bottom of Larry Lund’s lake, making up a small island that supports a bridge.

The brewing facility, also completed in 1997, was originally operated by a server named Theresa who was sent to Calgary to learn the brewing craft.

It wasn’t until the eighth batch of beer that Ray Huson came into the picture and eleven years later he is still Master Brewer.

Ray won at Fest of Ale in 1998 for “Best Beer” and “Best Booth” and went on to win again many more times over the years.

Patio Forced to Open Due to Weather Phenomenon

Blue skies and blazing sun were to blame for the early opening of the giant patio at the Barley Mill Brew Pub & Sports Bistro.

Capable of seating upwards of 70 people, the patio is huge and threatens to lure away customers from other venues with “less fortunate” patio situations.

Not only is the patio at The Mill vast, but it turns out it is also heated, which would lead a logical person to believe that a chilly, Spring evening might be just as enjoyable as a hot summer afternoon spent lounging in the shade of it’s overhead canopy.

But don’t believe everything you hear.

Come on out and get the facts for yourself.

NOW OPEN!

News from The Barley Mill

Well summer seems to be on its way out, but that doesn’t mean we have to close ourselves indoors for the next seven months. We finally decided it was time to expand our patio. It took a little longer than expected, but it’s pretty much complete.

Now we can host up to 100 people in one space, anytime of the year. We’ve got a new stage for live music, larger tables with comfy chairs, new sound system, heaters and a huge new BBQ for steaks and burgers. A new fire pit and temporary walls are being installed shortly, to make the outside feel like inside on the colder nights. So don’t just drive by the new patio, stop in for a beer and maybe a full meal, we’d love to see you in here!
